Conversion to /package

I really like the design of /package and hope to convert my entire system to 
use it, eliminating the /usr mess.

This would involve patching many of the programs I use, and it's not my place 
to register on behalf of the maintainers, but since this is all site-local it 
doesn't matter anyhow.  If I have any measure of success I think the proper 
thing to do would be to share the build system and source patches with the 
actual maintainers so they could register and distribute the patches as 
"contrib".

But since I'm using primarily GNU I predict any patches I send will be 
discarded. ;^)

Surely someone here has already done this at least partially.  Any pointers or 
guides you could offer would be very much appreciated.
