If, once you had posted, you were "approved" to post without a check, then any spam or virus which faked your address would be able to post (this is similar to lists with "subscribers-only" policies). You've just spent time composing an email that you expect the entire list to read; is it really too much to ask that you spend an additional 5 seconds hitting 'r' to reply?
