what could be causing empty log/current files?

Hello list,

I am installing qmail 1.03 and following Levine's O'Riley instructions very
slowly and deliberately

I am at the log file set up and after starting =>

        /var/qmail/supervise/qmail-send/log/main/current

which is empty

       -rw-r--r--  1 qmaill  qmail  0 Jun 10 12:50
/var/qmail/supervise/qmail-send/log/main/current

permissions as recommended according to Levine's text, it should have shown
       status: local 0/10 remote 0/20
Could anyone say what I might have missed
