Right something is wrong there, but I can't quite imagine what (this
works fine for me). Sorry I missed you on IRC last night. We may try

Indeed, but I figure requiring it to build (i.e. as a development platform)
is still acceptable, as long as the result (i.e. the runtime environment)
doesn't depend on it.
