thanks for the help. Using initclass saves me some code but more importantly decouples the table contents from the code.
Also rechecking my xml file I saw that I had not set the scrollpane constraints.

makes the vertical scrollbar appear.
As for localisation, I have already used localisation in the xml file for Swix and I hoped it would be possible to use the same file to contain the other text strings I want to use, rather than have 2 lots of properties files.
