Darren, you can check for different header files with
AC_CHECK_HEADERS(headerfile[, headerfile, ...])
in configure.in

For example you could use:
AC_CHECK_HEADERS(boost/signals.hpp, boost/shared_ptr.hpp,
boost/weak_ptr.hpp)
