Running and building one of the releases

Hello!
I've gotten one of the releases of Bochs from the site, which is 2.8.1
in fact.  Now I can run it okay. I've even got DLX to boot, both
native, and using the GRUB boot loader.. However this is where it got
strange. I've always been able to build the release to provide some
understanding of how the whole thing works. This one won't build.

I get a strange error message from the process. Now I'll try again
trying different later releases, to the most recent, and if need be
I'll make available those messages.
