I think it would be helpful to tweak the configure script so that instead of 
every option being --enable, some are --enable and some are --disable, 
reflecting the default value you would get if you ran configure with no 
options.  That way you could run 'configure --help' and you would get a list 
of default options, so you only have to specify the ones you want to be 
different from that list.
