enable e1000 netcard

hi:

  I boot up mu linux kernel on bochs ,which has enable e1000 netcard .
  After entering system ,I type 'ifconfig' to check the located ip
address for bochs ,it reports :  no such file /proc/net/dev .


 My question is : whether this is a soft ware matter or hard ware?
