Hi Devin,

While I am really not sure about the support for passing through an ISA soundcard in Bochs (as I am not a dev and I don’t recall ever seeing that option in the docs), I do know that Volker just spent a bunch of time porting in OPL3 code from DOSbox (for the emulated SB16 ISA device). He has also done a lot of clean-up on some of the existing code and documentation (perhaps he can be more specific, or you can review the changelogs). I have been testing some of the changes to the sound emulation code, but I have recently run out of time for a while. It’s killing me. I originally requested this work to be completed, so that I no longer would have to rely on severely aging hardware to enjoy classic DOS gaming. DOSbox works fine for most things, but there are some issues. Plus, with Bochs being a machine simulator, it is much closer to the real experience and portable as hell. It is a perfect avenue to get this done. Progress IS being made.

Last I tested, I was trying to run Ultima 7 TBG. Sound worked better than on the 2.6.7 release (the music and intro actually play now), but I was noticing a lot of pinging and popping while playing. It was pretty bad for me. I am running this on Windows 8.1. I also had difficulty getting the sound to sync with the Guardian during the intro. Adjusting the IPS and DMA settings seemed to work better. The game performance seems a bit up and down speed-wise on my i5, 8GB laptop. I wish I could get it more consistent. I am still playing with the DMA timing IPS values. It worked, but there was certainly room for improvement. Since I haven’t had a chance to test the latest revisions, I can’t say whether or not additional progress has been made. I think Volker mentioned that the sound needed to be moved to its own thread, but that the rewrite work might be too much effort and beyond his capabilities. If you’re up for giving the testing a shot as well, it could only help to clarify some of these items. I’m not sure who else, if anyone, is testing this stuff right now.

My plan is to test other games, and to do some more thorough testing from the native driver utilities, as soon as I can. I appreciate all of the time and effort that everyone has put towards this request, and the app in general. Bochs really is pretty awesome!

Subject: [Bochs-developers] Access to ISA card on host system

Hello, I have an ISA card with dos software needed to make it function. I have kept a dos machine around for the sole purpose of using the ISA card, however I was curious if it would be possible to run DOS inside Bochs and have access to the card on the host machine. The machine in question is running NetBSD and Bochs is installed.

Any help would be appreciated.
