BTW, Jim Bergsten is not some patent troll, but a respected developer going way back to the early VM days. I suspect he has taken Ron Hilton's advice about applying for patents to heart, perhaps encouraged by previous success, and perhaps by Messrs. Greenberg Traurig. It may be that his intentions are entirely honourable with respect to Open Source, but this surely doesn't negate the prior art published in Hercules and probably other places. I note with amusement/despair that he has another application that appears to want to protect the notion of tracking pharmaceutical samples with RFID tags. I'm sure no one ever thought of that before.
