I have done further experimentation and
found that a partial block of 1752 works
fine on a 3390, it's just 9345 that is
causing me trouble.

And further experimentation shows that
if I have a partial block of 8347 it works,
but 8346 fails to get read. I tried looking
for such magic numbers in the Hercules
code but didn't find anything.

Next thing I'm going to try is uncompressed
DASD.
