I sat next to one of the bigger ones in the IBM Manchester (UK) Marketing Center for a year or so. When XA appeared and it became “not so hot” we “purloined/borrowed” it to develop X.25 software on (under contract to IBM). We also “purloined” a couple more from other marketing centres, so we had enough bus-and tag channels for the Series/1s that did the X.25 links, the tape drive, and the 3725 and a full house of memory. It caused all sorts of issues as it was serial number 7 (I think) and the production code for the PS/2 support PC wouldn’t run…..
… but I don’t ever remember CKD emulation being available in the UK. I thought that to run MVS you needed some CKD disks on the channel cards, which made having a 9370 pointless….

P.S. when I say “purloined” they were taking up space in the Marketing Centres that they wanted to use for other things. Whilst I worked inside IBM I was never an IBM Employee, IBM provided machine time and an X.25 link as part of our contract. The IBM manager found that the Marketing Centres were not marketing the 9370s and wanted rid. He offered to do all the paper work to make them vanish, if they were happy for him to have them. They said yes and three arrived at my real place of work…

Oh ... and 9370's came in many forms ... from the under the table model to a full 2 rack model.

I don’t ever remember CKD emulation on these? Weren’t they one of the original 9370 drives, which were FBA only? This meant the 9370 was really only good for VM/SP because the built in drives were not supported by MVS.

The 9335 is both the controller and the DASD ...
-A01 is the controller
-B01 are the drives (up to four) (850MB each)

Says who?
With ICKDSF, you can initialize a 9335 as an emulated CKD device. Thereafter, it performs as a CKD device...

Ok, good news. I have updated PDOS so that
although it still uses blocks of 18452, those
blocks can be put onto any device type, e.g.

Also I have successfully switched off EA
and the S/370 build now uses 16 MiB.

What I would like to work on next is to
create an EBCDIC ANSI terminal using a
PC so that micro-emacs can run on real
hardware. So I'd like to pick up that
