IIRC the STRING verb was not supported until the ANS COBOL V4 compiler, circa 1974?  Not positive about that date, but that was about when I was at an employer who brought it into the shop.  I remember it at about that date because I was the first one to try to use the STRING verb in a test program with the new compiler and it immediately caused a "D" level fatal compiler error.  Soon fixed via PTF, but the sysprog there said to me "Only you would find this bug . . . ".
