RE: 3174 disks

First the 3174 will read two format disks, given a 2.4 drive, 1.2 and 2.4. I
have never managed to convert a 1.2 to a 2.4..

.. never tried a normal disk or visa versa..

 

To read a 2.4 you would need a machine with an appropriate controller. These
were rare in the day. Who knows if any still exist.

Hi there!

   I've seen it discussed a few times, but no definitive answers that I
could piece together...

   Has anyone on here successfully read or duplicated a 3174 diskette on a
regular computer?  If so, can you tell me what hardware, drive, and software
you used?

 

   I'm trying to resurrect my old 3174 and get my 3290 running, and I'm
really hoping to know for sure:

 

1.	 What format are the 3174 disks?  I know they're 2.4MB drives, but
are the floppies actually 2.4MB?
2.	Will the 3174 read a regular 5.25" floppy?

 

   From a historical perspective, does anyone know anything about the
workflow or tools used in how IBM developed the 3174 and it's microcode?
