I've somehow missed this. Granted it has been a couple of years (and
a very "long" couple of years at that) since I looked into copying 3174
disks, but still. ;) I have many 3174 disks that are hand-labeled and
thus obviously copies, but have never figured out exactly how that was
done. With all the 3174 stuff that we do around here (and probably
thirty 3174s now) I'm surprised that I've never run across this.
(remember I'm a UNIX/VMS guy, I've never run IBM hardware in a
production environment!)

That's a very good question. I don't know of any other little notches
or anything else in the 2.4MB media that would allow the drive to detect
it. (I don't have one in front of me, they're all around the corner in
the museum)
I believe the media itself actually IS different, though. A couple of
years ago I was given two large shoeboxes full of 3174 disks, probably
200 of them. I was very excited about it until the guy told me that he
had bulk-erased them and tried to use them on his PC. Sigh. But he
said he eventually gave up because they "wouldn't work". He was trying
to use them as 1.2MB (HD) disks.
As it turns out, many of them were still readable, by some miracle. ;)

Oh, I wasn't talking about that. I thought the discussion was about
getting 3174 software, sorry!
