It would be really really great to see more free software ported to MVS. I'm doing my best to make that as painless as possible for someone from a Unix background. BFN. Paul. --- I don't think will be much of help in this discussion, but I got some bit more from GCC, running in ATL 31-bit memory, I compiled PCRE, I don't remember which version, but not far from the current Linux version, under MVS3.8j, not really MVS/380, rather a Moseley SYSGEN running the bare minimum to access ATL memory, in 31-bit mode. It pass most of the tests, but the porting wasn't easy, at least for my level. I did it most as an exercise and as a test for GCC under MVS. If I remember correctly we discovered a GCCMVS bug in the process of PCRE port. PCRE is a really "simple" package for a modern Linux distro, which requires to use few of the POSIX API primitives, from the other side is a rather complex and large C package. If would be of any help in this discussion, I may try to refresh my memory about what I've done, a couple of years ago. I had some thought about what can be done, further in this direction, under MVS with ATL memory. I don't think, for example, any program using the UNIX open/read/write/seek/close model can be easily ported to MVS, without a UNIX file system available, like ZFS under Z/OS, but just using old good MVS access methods. Porting a real shell, like bash, my first port to AIX PS/2 and AIX/370 a loooong time ago, would be a real nightmare, I think even for an experienced mainframe programmer.
