As far as CP is concerned, CMS is just yet another operating system! You just have to make parallels between the 'virtual world' and the 'real world'.. So logging on into a virtual machine is the virtual equivalent of powering on a system (or starting hercules). The CP commands are the virtual equivalent of the hardware/manual controls + devices controls - and hercules panel commands. ... a few examples : (V = CP Command in VM, R = Real World action (S/370 era), H = Hercules action) V - LOGON R - Power on H - Start hercules V - CP DEFINE STORAGE 16M R - Calling your fav IBM rep and fitting your rig with 16MB H - having a MAINSTOR 16 statement in your hercules config V - DEFINE GRAF 400 R - Buying a Channel attached 3174, connecting it to the system on channel 4 with a CU Address of 00 H - having a '400 3270' statement in your herc config V - DIAL <vmuser> (from an enabled terminal) R - Connecting a 3270 terminal to the aforementioned 3174 and powering it on H - issuing a tn3270 connection to a running instance of hercules V - SYSTEM RESET R - The "System Reset" manual control H - Issuing the "sysreset" command from the hercules panel V - PURGE RDR 0001 (assuming Spool file id 0001 is at the top) R - Manually removing a stack of card from a real card reader H - devinit <cuu> * (where <cuu> is the address of a card reader) Etc.. --Ivan
