If it was just 16 megs of store then I don't think it would have trouble
IPLing on any 370 hardware, and I remember that at Liverpool University the
Computer Department bought a used machine (3090 I think) to replace a very
old 3080 (I think) box (sorry don't remember the exact model numbers)
because the h/w maintainance on the old box was more than the price of the
new box. However the Physics department said they would have the 3080 only
to later find it wouldn't run VM/SP and that they din't have a license for
HPO.... The IBM Archives at :-

imply that VM/HPO was required for the 3080 so that seems to match. I wonder
if any one else remembers any more? I did have an e-mail for Iain Stinson
who was the DPM at the time but his web site hasn't been updated for some
time...
