It was not Hamlet to speak the famous phrase; Hamlet was following the
Ghost

of his Father and Marcellus said to Horatio: 'Something is rotten in the
state of Denmark'

In Italy the phrase is by all means famous and is translated as 'C'e'
del marcio in Danimarca'
