Help with z/VM 5.3 Evaluation Edition

I've been out of the game too long and sort of lost and need help.

I'm got the z/VM 5.3 Evaluation Edition installed and it works fine.

I managed to copy the ramdisk to a real dasd so it's no longer 0881 but
rather 0801, so I guess I can do whatever I want/need to and it'll "stick".

What I need to do is setup a new userid for ... um, a "more modern MVS". ;-)

Once I've got that setup I then need to begin researching a Herc issue
related to varying paths/chpids/subchannels online/offline.

The bug in Herc involves what we THINK is a missing CRW Machine Check
(Channel Report Word) that's generated whenever you attach a device to the
system that didn't exist before. That is, you power-on Herc without the
device and then once the guest is IPL'ed and up and running, you then
"attach" the device to Herc and it generates a CRW Machine Check for the
guest so it can know the device is now available. That's where the bug is in
Herc that I need to find.

It mostly works fine under almost all circumstances except a very specific
one and that's what I need to research.

I'm hoping I can use z/VM 5.3 to do the same thing (vary a
path/chpid/subchannel (one or the other or all 3) online to the "MVS" guest)
and using z/VM 5.3 look at what type(s) of CRW Machine Checks IT generates.
That will I hope give me the need information to learn what Hercules also
needs to do (but isn't).

But my inexperience with modern VM's is getting in the way.  :(

(The last VM I worked on 20 years ago was VM/SP 5, and that was so long ago
I've since forgotten most of what I knew)

Can someone "kick-start" me in the right direction and maybe give me a few
pointers where to start my (re-)learning curve?  :)
