Perhaps there is still something odd going on.  Could you start xt5250 and 
then run the following command:

ps ax | grep xterm

Then look for the line that matches your instance of xt5250.  Mine says 
this:

  2121 pts/2    S      0:00 xterm -name xt5250 -bg black -fg white -T 
xt5250 - era1 +sb -tn xterm-5250 -geometry 80x25 -e /usr/bin/xt5250 -BOOT 
era1

(that is all one line)

I'm thinking gnome might be setting some variable on xterm and I'm hoping 
that the above command will reveal what it is.  Of course, I could also be 
totally wrong.  You can test by starting X without starting gnome and 
using some other window manager/desktop manager.
