Yes, using xt5250 is preferable as it sets up an xterm for you.  Using 
tn5250 still works.  Looking at the errors below it looks like something 
strange is happening with the xt5250 script.  Test this by starting an 
xterm (you need to use xterm, not some other kind of term like rxterm or 
gterm or konsole) and then running tn5250 <session-name> inside that 
xterm (where <session-name> is the name of the session you have defined in 
$HOME/.tn5250rc or simply use the hostname of the AS/400).

These look like xterm is behaving strangely on your system.  Maybe this is 
an Ubuntu problem - any other Ubuntu users want to check this?
