It shows a number of options. In the bash shell, I'v used the following key 
option which works similar to the original 5250's use of the command key 
before the function keys were added.

ESC Shift +   (Above = sign not numeric pad)

The original 5250 had a cmd key on the left, and then used 1 thru = for F1 
thru F12, and cmd key plus shift 1 the shift = for the F13 to F24.

There are a couple of keys that gnome uses that effect this. 

There is also a Java version of tn5250 that has a built in key mapper, but it 
runs under a shell but haven't tried it on a fully text shell?
