F-keys don't work

I've got TN5250 installed on a Debian box, and when I try to use the F
keys, I get an error that the cursor is in a protected area. What the heck
is going on and how do I fix it? Right now, I've got a box that *has* to be
working in the morning, so I just started a Telnet session that *looks*
like a 5250 emulator, but I'd like to know what I did wrong so I can make
it work with TN5250.
