Well, that time ago we dealt with 'bytes' and perhaps 'records' in sequential or indexsequential files. IMS gave us a chance to deal with 'data' and to put the 'data' in relationship in a common store.
The description centrally stored in the DBD, even a lightweight acccesscontrol in the PSB (PROCOPT=). I guess the Apollo program was highly depending on it, so the primary goal was getting IMS running, error free, maybe only in a very small slice of its capability. 
But I agree, IBM had more then 45 years time to re-develop or enhance.

What's about the CODASYL Databases, sometimes called IDMS or IDS-I / IDS-II ? Can we find some 3.8j ready pieces ?
