Well as standalone emulation works via TERMCAP/TERMINFO I just used that...

That's correct, you define them as locally attached 3270 devices. The 7171
itself has a normal bus+tag connection, and a load of RS232/v24 async
connections. So as far as the OS is concerned you have a channel attached
3274. All the magic is done in the 7171. From what I remember you get a
terminal type menu when you connect, but its been ages since I worked with
one. Later the same type of functionality was built into the 3174 controller
and the 9370 ASCII attachment feature. I think you could also do printer
emulation to dot-matrix printer...

There is one minor exception. There is a transparent write facility that
allows an application program to write directly to the screen. This can be
used with devices that understand Tektronics emulation to plot on the
terminal.
