I think you have some valid points in your arguments, but on the other hand 
it's not true that the programmer profession is endangered. At most, ONE 
business model of programming is endangered, and that is, the one where the 
PROGRAM is sold. But you can still make money by bespoken software, or 
being hired in a company(like myself) to program for company specific 
problems.

Think about it like web-development. The web programmer gets paid for 
making a bespoken webpage. In the same way there will always be the need 
for programmers. Having the possibility to use previous GPLed software will 
be an advantage, we don't have to reinvent the wheel all over again...

I don't know about specific statistics, but I'm sure that along with the 
increase of Free software, the amount of proprietary software is also 
increasing. For example, you will still notice that the majority of 
software used is proprietary.
