Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you.

I see no inherent reason why this couldn't happen.  It's no different from 
seeing proprietary source under NDA and later writing something similar, 
and getting accused of "stealing" the proprietary code.  Same reasoning -- 
why do you think "clean-room" reverse-engineering techniques exist?
