In theory it is possible with DGA - however that's a huge piece of crap that I wouldn't touch with a 200 meter pole. Quite some time ago (2002 I think) I talked to several of the XFree86 developers (now they are freedesktop.org developers) about it, and they do agree that an extension is needed - however they believe that it is not worth creating an extension just for this purpose - and think it would be better to create an X extension that provides all sorts of new input functionality. Of course, I haven't looked into this since then (and then it was only a cursory look), so something may be available of which I am not aware.
