When's the last time you did a "cvs -z3 update -Pd"?  Did you do a "cvs
-z3 update" (or similar) right before it stopped working?

I get errors similar to that when my local tree doesn't have a directory
that just got created in the repository.  CVS won't pull new directories
until you give it the -d option.  -P will delete (prune) directories
that no longer exist in the repository, so I usually use them together.
