Hard to say if you're doing anything wrong or not. Presumably you've 
setup the registry correctly if not that could be the cause.

We have an implementation of dinput8 which is nothing short of grossly 
wrong.  If your application is actually trying to create a DirectInput8 
object it'll fail since we just call back into dinput.dll :( Patches are 
always welcome.

Without seeing some traces I can't say if this is a registry issue or 
something else.
