It depends on the type of internet connection. If it disconnects after a
certain time of inactivity, you need pings at a shorter interval just to
prevent it to disconnect automatically. You only need it for that
connection.

If you have a permanent connection, there is no need for keep-alive pings. I
never used them for static tunnels via DSL or CABLE.
