CIPE fails in RH FC3 kernels (2.6.9 & 2.6.10)

I am test-installing FC3 on an aging i586 (k6-2) machine.  Many things
have not gone especially well.  CIPE is one of them.

I have 1.6.0, and it builds readily enough.  The configuration file is
one I used under RH7.3, and the remote endpoint has not changed (has
not even rebooted) in months.

Running "cd /etc/cipe; ciped-cb -o /etc/cipe/options.ts" gives me an
oops.  The two ending kernel messages below appear to be the result of
nmbd and nifd hanging on discovering new interfaces which they then
cannot put to use properly: Those two programs go into state `D' and
are now unkillable.  ciped-cb does not continue running, of course; a
subsequent "rmmod cipcb" hangs.

The remote endpoint never reports any contact via syslog, no surprise.

This same result was seen with the original FC3 2.6.9 kernel.  That
failure is why I picked up the 2.6.10 RPMs and installed them.  No joy.

Any thoughts?  I can't be the first person to try CIPE under FC3 or
2.6, can I?
