There was a reason why I added the libraries to the LDDFLAGS, but I cannot remember. I am using these option for several years by now. I agree with you, the -L./.libs needs to come before the LDDFLAGS. I just am unable to understand the logic of the .in / .am and Makefiles to find the proper solution. The option -L./.libs is added during configure and in my understanding it should be added before any LDDFLAGS.
