[AVFS] avfs in web server

I tried to set up avfs for my web server with the purpose of being able to  
download individual files from zip archives. However I just get 404 when I  
try to access the .avfs directory. In the bash shell it works fine. I used  
mountavfs with the user that is running the web server first.

But I see if I ls -la the users home directory with another user I see  
this:

drwxrwxr-x  5 root     www-data  122 2010-10-20 12:02 .
drwxr-xr-x 15 root     root      151 2010-02-12 22:36 ..
??????????  ? ?        ?           ?                ? .avfs

Any ideas why it's not working ?
