Huh? Direct/indirect/double-indirect/... _is_ a tree, albeit not
balanced one. What makes s5fs/ffs/ufs/ext* so exceptionally robust is
fixed position of inode tables, which provides a guaranteed starting
point for fsck under almost any circumstances.
