I can't just do this unconditionally because it will break on systems
that don't ship with GNU diff and hence don't support unified diffs
(i.e., Solaris, *BSD, Darwin, etc.)

In order to accept this change, there needs to be a configure test for
diff -u, so that we don't break on systems shipping with a BSD userspace.
