I pretty much just took the differences between Andreas's extents patch 
and the extents.patch on sf.net, and broke the inter-diff between the 
two into semi-functional smaller patches - might make it easier to 
evaluate, I hope.  If they all look good then they can just be rolled 
into the main extents.patch.
