What version of e2fsprogs were you using? 

Does dumpe2fs work?  If so, can you send me the dumpe2fs output?

I would love to have e2image single stepped to see where it is dieing;
could you do that, or somehow arrange to give me temporary login
access to your box?  I can send you a PGP-signed ssh key upon request....
