daily builds which I believe solve this problem.  The
SMB/CIFS server was not evaluating the symlink value when
opening the file.  The end result was that attempts to
truncate the file during a open operation were failing.
You can't apply truncation to the symlink itself.

Looking at the source code I can find no reason why this
would have ever worked.  The support for recursively following
the symlink simply did not exist.  I would be interested in
seeing if anyone has any test cases which fail using the new
algorithms.
