Tonight's daily builds add a new feature. When Freelance mode is used a
locally constructed root.afs volume is created instead of mounting the
root.afs volume of the default cell. Previously the fake root.afs could
only support mount points. This was a problem for sites which depend on
the use of symlinks in the root.afs volume. Now it is possible to
create symlinks in the local root.afs volume which are persistent across
sessions.
>symlink make \\afs\all\link \\afs\all\athena.mit.edu\user\j\a\jaltman
>symlink list \\afs\all\link
'\\afs\all\link' is a symlink to 'athena.mit.edu\user\j\a\jaltman'
>symlink rm \\afs\all\link
The symlinks are stored in the registry at:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenAFS\Client\Freelance\Symlinks
There is still a bit more to do. Specifically, there is nothing to
prevent any user from creating symlinks nor am I sure that the Explorer
Shell extensions work.
As usual the daily builds are located at:
http://web.mit.edu/~jaltman/Public/OpenAFS/
/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/j/a/jaltman/Public/OpenAFS/
\\AFS\athena.mit.edu\user\j\a\jaltman\Public\OpenAFS\
Todays builds are digitally signed with my [email protected] cert. I have
ordered a signing certificate from Thawte for Secure Endpoints Inc.
which I will use in the future. This will allow the signatures to be
verified by Windows without additional work on the part of the end user
and the binaries can be timestamped as well as signed.
