On Friday Microsoft released build 5536 (pre-RC1) of Windows Vista. This build still has at least one significant bug in the redirector that prevents OpenAFS for Windows from receiving SMB messages. This bug can be worked around by disabling the SMB service with the command: sc config smb start= disabled After a reboot all of the \\AFS traffic will be delivered to OpenAFS and the forthcoming 1.5.8 will work quite nicely both from the command line and the Explorer Shell. The one area that I expect there to be outstanding issues with is Integrated Login. I expect Microsoft to release Vista RC1 in about three weeks. It is crucial that any outstanding bugs in Vista that need to be addressed by Microsoft be taken care of before Vista RC1 is frozen. If you are a member of the Vista Tech Beta, the Vista Preview, or have a MSDN subscription, please install Windows Vista 5536, install OpenAFS for Windows 1.5.8 (when it is released) and test them together. MIT KFW 3.1 Beta 1 works on this build of Vista. If you experience bugs, file bug reports both with Microsoft and with [email protected]. Provide the Microsoft bug number in your submission to openafs-bugs so that it can be tracked. Thanks. Jeffrey Altman
