Re: Regarding Static Port Numbers in OpenAFS

OpenAFS uses the port numbers that were assigned to the AFS protocol in 
the 80s by IANA.  There are thousands of application protocols that have 
port number assignments.  You can find a list at

If you are using the 1.4.x or above OpenAFS file servers, the client 
port does not have to be port 7001.   The service ports must still be 
the well-known port numbers because neither CellServDB files nor the DNS 
AFSDB records can specify a port number at which the VLserver can be 
found and the VLServer cannot tell the clients on which port the File 
Servers can be found.
