Are Full FreeBSD sources needed?

I have a freshly installed 5.1R box that is a minimal install and has only
kernel sources. I see that the build process is referring to OpenAFS
provided files that would be part of a system that had everything
installed, e.g. libdes files.

Is it preferable to build on a system with full libraries and sources?
(Feel free to tell me that I have a gross conceptual error on the build
process.) I assume it is preferable to build against system installed
libraries, rather than OpenAFS provided libraries.

Thanks,
