There are 1.8.16~pre1-1 packages for Debian sid (at least for amd64):

https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/openafs

These packages also work in Debian Trixie, Ubuntu Noble, and Ubuntu 
Resolute.

 From what I see, there were no Debian related changes between pre1 and 
the final version (only RPM related changes).

Therefore, we are using these packages on many systems (for Noble we are 
only using kernel 6.17, but 6.8 will probably work, too).

Of course, the final version in Debian would be appreciated, especially 
if these could be uploaded to 
https://launchpad.net/~openafs/+archive/ubuntu/stable .
