You probably just need to run the portmap daemon, and whatever scripts you have to start the NFS server just happen to be running portmapper. Basically, in some versions of linux, when you make an NFS mount system call, the kernel wants to talk to the portmapper on the NFS server. I'm not exactly sure why. It may be in order to see if the server is running the NFS locking protocol software. It doesn't use the portmapper to figure out what port the NFS server is using (since that is supplied as part of the mount arguments). David
