I'm on an iMac 2008 with 4GB of RAM, and I don't use encryption.

My Backup preferences are set to keep 5 daily backups, and do an autosave
every 5 minutes.

It takes about 15 seconds to launch, from the time I click on the document
shortcut icon in the Dock, until the MD home window appears in all its
glory. I presume most of that time is spent reading and parsing the data
file.

I've never been aware of when backups or autosaves are happening.
