I'm still on build 751, but it sounds like they are trying to correct 
the opposite problem: in build 751 (with Java 1.6.0_23 under Windows 
Vista, both of which might also matter), the menu does not even 
appear until I release the mouse.

I don't know what the Java specs are on mouse behavior, but of course 
in MS Windows, menus are supposed to work either by click-release to 
bring up the menu and click-release again to select, or by click to 
bring up the menu and release to select. The latter is the original 
Macintosh way, though in recent years Mac OSX has made both methods available.

I probably would not have noticed because I seldom use the mouse in 
these situations. I'm the opposite: I mostly use the keyboard for 
these selections. However, I do use the mouse enough here that 
improving the behavior would be a pretty significant benefit. The 
category menu in particular tends to be pretty unwieldy.
