I'm not certain, but I think the reason was that the buttons tended 
to obscure some information and caused confusion for that reason. 
It's been too long since I used a version with the buttons, and I 
literally never used them anyway (always keyboard), so I don't 
remember exactly what it looked like.

I remember there were some complaints here about it at the time. The 
world is divided into two kinds of people, those who do all they can 
with the mouse and those who do all they can with the keyboard ...
